Valencia is one of the most important cities in Spain, an open door to the Mediterranean Sea with the special charm of a harbour city. The city harmonizes the remants of its remote past, dated 138 B.C. with its most modern buildings. Mild winters and warm summers make Valencia a perfect place to visit. The Cathedral, the Basilica, the famous tower of “El Miguelete” and also the “Lonja de la Seda”, the Central Market, the Towers of Quart and Serranos, the bridges over the Turia river, the Botanical and Royal Gardens, the Fine Arts Museum, the Almudín, the IVAM (Modern Art Museum of Valencia), “L’Hemisferic” and the Arts and Science City are just a few of the interesting places you can see.
Pleasant weather encourages night-life. There are several different districts where you can go for a drink or dance until midnight (El Carmen, Cánovas, Ruzafa, la Malvarrosa…).
“Paella” is the most typical dish of the city; you can sample it in practically all the restaurants along the one of the beaches, say: “La Malvarrosa”, “Patacona”, “El Saler”... There are many and varied local holidays or “fiestas” during the year like “El Corpus” at Easter, but the most famous of them all is “Las Fallas”, known for its “International Touristic Interest” classification. Every year, from the 15th through the 19th of March the streets are filled with “mascletás” (firecrackers), parades of flower offerings, paella cooking competitions and amazing fireworks shows at night called “Castillos”.
